One Remarkable Barrel v2

Variety:   Shiraz

Region:   Barossa Valley

Vintage:  2018

Version: 2 (Bottled August 2020)

Our flagship wine is a unique bottling of a single barrel of rare wine, producing only 600 bottles of an exceptional wine.

Sourced from a vineyard planted in the 1890s, the 120 year old vines produce liquid history. The ancient roots extract deep in the ground, giving the grapes flavours that younger vines simply can not access. The aged vines also ensure a small but highly concentrated crop with dark skins and intense fruit characters.

Winemaker Rolf Binder understands old vines better than most (and not because he was there when they were planted, as I often tell him…), he learnt his viticulture from the great Vic Kraft, the architect of many of the Barossa’s greatest vineyards. The use of older oak and larger format barrels lets the natural flavours of the vines shine.

The wine comes packaged in a bespoke 5 bottle box with 4 tissue wrapped bottles and one bottle in a gift box.

Offering power as well as refinement, this magnificent shiraz shows dark fruit intensity combined with cedar, toasted spice, floral and smoked game nuances on the nose, leading to a superbly concentrated palate that's plush and mouthfilling. Wonderfully harmonious and richly textured with a commanding presence.

The 2nd iteration from 2018 of the One Remarkable Barrel series, here from 120yo shiraz in the Vine Vale district. It has spent 2 years in a 2nd-fill American oak puncheon, which of course shows, though the fruit has the power–weight capacity here to be able to lift on the palate and celebrate the much-loved generosity and opulence of Barossa shiraz. It's old-school and grandfatherly and kind of loveable because of it. 2022 Halliday Wine Companion
